Sales And Use Tax Specialist - Houston, Tx

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented sales tax specialist to join our team on a temporary basis. This temporary position will primarily focus on the larger portion of sales and use tax, along with various AP/AR responsibilities and month-end procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Sales and use tax compliance:
  • Oversee the sales and use tax filings and reporting.
  • Review and reconcile tax rates and ensure proper sales and use tax calculation.
  • Address any discrepancies in sales tax collection and reporting.
  • Certificate validation:
  • Review and validate exemption certificates to ensure compliance with local and state regulations.
  • Work closely with customers and vendors to resolve certificate-related issues.
  • Accounts payable & receivable:
  • Assist with any questions or discrepancies related to accounts payable and receivable.
  • Ensure proper documentation for tax purposes is captured.
  • Month-end close:
  • Support month-end closing processes with a focus on sales and use tax.
  • Assist in ensuring all transactions are correctly recorded for tax reporting.
  • General tax assistance:
  • Collaborate with the accounting team to ensure that tax records are complete and accurate.
  • Provide assistance during audits or inquiries related to sales and use tax.

Competencies:

  • Previous experience with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in sales and use tax is required (experience with Avalara or similar software is highly preferred).
  • Familiarity with AP/AR processes and general accounting procedures.
  • Strong understanding of tax certificates and exemption compliance.
  • Ability to handle month-end close tasks and reporting efficiently.
  • Detail-oriented, with a strong ability to analyze and validate financial data.
  • Excellent communication skills for working with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet tools.
