Manager, Tax - Indirect Tax (Sales and Operations)

In this role, you will work with a dynamic team of tax professionals to ensure that Walmart, a Fortune 1 market leader, accurately applies transaction taxes to customers and members shopping online and at our over 5,000 brick-and-mortar Walmart and Sam's Club locations in the United States and Puerto Rico. The transaction scale and scope of complexity of taxation at Walmart will attract individuals who are excited to navigate novel challenges and engaged by intellectually stimulating work. As a Manager, you will research and analyze complex transaction tax issues, leverage your sales tax engine experience to monitor and apply tax changes, and play a key role in leading a successful journey towards Tax Modernization.
About Indirect Tax at Walmart
The Indirect Tax Team plays a critical role in Walmart's ability to navigate the complex landscape of indirect taxation, ensuring compliance and maximizing profitability across the corporation. The complexity and scale of taxation at Walmart encompasses our ecommerce business, brick & mortar stores, other business ventures and beyond. The Sales Tax Operations (STO) team at Walmart is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of transaction taxes charged to customers and members shopping online and at our brick-and-mortar locations. The STO team performs research and assessments of transactional tax law changes and implements any necessary configuration changes of indirect taxes to thousands of jurisdictions each year. This is a unique opportunity to join the team during an end-to-end tax modernization project and assist in the transformation of the Sales Tax function at an industry leader.
What you'll do:
- Configure sales tax engines for Walmart.com, Walmart Marketplace, and SamsClub.com.
- Research legislative and regulatory changes to state and local sales tax law, analyze the impact on our business and compliance requirements, effectively communicate necessary changes, and work as a team to successfully implement those changes.
- Assist in review and categorization of item level attributes to assign proper taxability.
- Manage multiple projects and provide guidance and support to other STO associates.
- Bring sales tax and systems experience to become an active participant in the Tax Modernization project.
- Effectively communicate tax technical requirements to technology partners.
- Assist with special projects as needed.
What you'll bring:
- 3-5 years of indirect tax experience that includes a mix of sales tax, use tax, product tax, excise tax, transaction tax, gross receipts tax, and tax technical concepts.
- 1-2 years of hands-on sales tax engine experience including system integration work, rule creation and other general system management.
- An undergraduate degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. Advanced degree or certification (e.g., JD, LLM, Master's Degree, CPA, or CMI) related to Taxation is preferred.
- Past roles in industry (retail and/or ecommerce) and/or consulting (Big 4).
- Strong tax research and writing skills.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
- Desire to work in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
- A passion for tackling challenges and engaging at Fortune 1 scale.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Economics or related field and 2 years' experience in accounting, finance, income tax compliance, or related area OR 4 years' experience in accounting, finance, income tax compliance, or related area.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Leading cross-functional projects
- License to practice law in at least one state
- Supervisory experience
- J.D., Masters: Accounting, Masters: Business, Masters: Economics, Masters: Finance, Masters: Law
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) - Certificate
